The death of an 11-year-old girl in Baruipur, in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, has set off waves of grief and anger across the state. The child had reportedly left home to buy a birthday gift when she went missing. Her body was later recovered from a pond, stuffed inside a sack.

What investigators have found

Police say a special investigation team has been formed and a murder case registered. Three people have been arrested so far, identified in local reports as Sardar Ananda Sardar, Pravash Mondol and Dibakar Sardar, while several others are being questioned. An autopsy pointed to a brutal assault before death, and CCTV footage reportedly shows the child walking alongside a man now in custody.

"A special investigation team has been formed. A murder case has been lodged, and the investigation is on. Prohibitory orders are in place and the situation is under control," a senior Bengal police officer said, appealing to residents not to act on rumours.

Anger spills onto the streets

The killing sparked protests in Baruipur, with residents blocking roads. In the tense aftermath there was also a mob lynching, police vehicles were set on fire, and two central force personnel were injured. Prohibitory orders were imposed to bring the situation under control.

A political flashpoint

The case quickly turned political. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said an SIT had been set up, that arrests and detentions had been made, and that the government would push for capital punishment for those responsible. "In the first case, we will give justice to the family," he said.

Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee said she had planned to visit the victim's family but was blocked by heavy police deployment near her home, and questioned the mobilisation. Other leaders across party lines condemned the crime while urging that the rule of law prevail and warning against mob violence.

The bigger picture

Beyond the politics, the case has renewed public debate over the safety of children and women in the state, the speed of investigations in crimes against minors, and how quickly protests can tip into vigilante violence. Authorities say all those responsible will be arrested and prosecuted.
