Electric Car Sales 2026: China, Europe and the US Compared
EV sales hit new records in the first half of 2026. Here is how the three biggest markets stack up.

Global electric vehicle sales crossed 10 million units in the first half of 2026, according to Rho Motion and the IEA. But the split between China, Europe and the United States tells three very different stories.

China leads by a wide margin

China accounts for roughly two-thirds of global EV sales. BYD, Geely, Xiaomi and Li Auto dominate the domestic market. Battery electric and plug-in hybrids are essentially at price parity with combustion cars in most segments.

Europe rebounds

After a soft 2024, Europe is back to double-digit EV growth. Tighter 2025 CO2 fleet rules pushed automakers to price aggressively, and Volkswagen, Renault and Stellantis all reported record EV volumes.

United States is mixed

The US is growing but slower. The rollback of federal EV tax credits in 2025 hit sales, though Tesla, GM and Hyundai have held up better than expected. Trucks and SUVs still dominate the mix.

The Chinese brand invasion

BYD, Chery and MG are expanding rapidly in Europe, Latin America and Southeast Asia despite EU tariffs. Their pricing pressure is the single biggest story in the global auto industry right now.

What is next

Solid-state battery announcements are expected from Toyota, Samsung SDI and CATL in the second half. Whichever ships first will reset the range and cost conversation.
