Microsoft Cuts 4,800 Jobs and Shrinks Xbox in Big Restructure
Microsoft is cutting roughly 4,800 roles, about 2.1% of its workforce, with Xbox taking an immediate hit of 1,600 jobs.

Microsoft has confirmed one of its largest rounds of layoffs in recent memory, telling staff it will cut around 4,800 roles as part of what it calls a significant restructure. The figure works out to about 2.1% of the company total headcount.
Xbox takes the first blow
The gaming division is bearing the heaviest immediate load. Roughly 1,600 jobs are going right away inside Xbox, a unit Microsoft has spent years building through big acquisitions. The move suggests leadership wants a leaner games business after a costly buying spree.
Why the cuts are happening now
Microsoft says the reshuffle is about focus, not survival. The company is pouring money into artificial intelligence and data centre capacity, and it is trimming teams it sees as less central to that push. That trade off has become common across big tech, where AI spending is rising while other budgets shrink.
What it means for staff and players
For employees, the timing is painful and the message is blunt. For players, the risk is slower output or shelved projects as teams are merged. Microsoft insists its core franchises are safe, but a restructure this size rarely leaves a roadmap untouched.
